Boathouse beginnings

Owner, Ben Squire, created The Boathouse Cafe, founded on a life-long passion for fishing. At the age of 21, with the help of a £1000 grant from The Princes Trust, Ben purchased a fishing boat and started a small business taking the first mackerel and deep sea fishing trips in Plymouth, Devon. Since then the business has flourished. Ben now owns and manages six boats, taking fishing trips, harbour and eco cruises, party cruises, the ferry from Plymouth, Devon to the beaches of Cawsand, Cornwall and a commercial crab and lobster boat, The Southern Star, all operating under Plymouth Boat Trips Ltd.

Building The Boathouse Cafe
The Boathouse Cafe has been lovingly renovated from an old fisherman’s store and boasts a fresh bright interior, crafted by one of the Plymouth Boat Trips team, Mike Peonides, an expert wooden boat builder. Complete with mezzanine level, The Boathouse Cafe is perfect for cosy coffees and delicious dining from daytime through to evening. There’s also plenty of covered and heated outdoor seating on the quayside, with fantastic views, for drinking and dining al fresco.

Fresh and sustainable
Sustainability is central to the café’s ethos. Our fish and shellfish is caught in local waters by our very own day boat, The Southern Star. We use selective fishing methods that have almost zero levels of by catch, safeguarding fish stocks for the future. Anything not caught by ourselves is always sourced to support local fisheries or from certified sources.
